The
Women’s
Health Initiative in Bulgaria was established in 1998 with the purpose of
promoting a conversation on gender and health. This is achieved through conducting
interactive dialogues, educational and counseling programs, collaborative research projects,
and community outreach on topics related to the health of all members of society, with a focus
on women’s and girls’ health. The organizational initiative came from
people working in the
fields of health promotion, health education, health psychology and gender studies. This
group aims to enhance the dialogue with other existing health promotion and
research organizations and supports and adds to their activities. It hopes
to intensify communication and increase the representation of issues
related to women's health and rights in both medical and social science research
and legislation.
We
believe that the activities of the WHI in Bulgaria will foster the rights of
access to needed medical care, including not only the right to adequate
treatment, but also the rights to prevention, information, choice, safety,
privacy and confidentiality, comfort, and participation in medical
decision-making.
The
organization “Women’s Health Initiative” is active nationally for
Bulgaria. One
of its on-going goals is establishing contacts with similar groups
internationally.
